[Works] Story Idea: Voice of Machines
So, hey, check it out! I finally have a giant-robot story idea! This's a late entry into shadrad's idea meme (here, but it's friendlocked) -- not that there was a time limit or anything. It's got bits and pieces cribbed from Gun X Sword (which I've been watching lately thanks to tikitau) and I think Helena owes a little to Outlaw Star's Hilda, but that's no big deal. In the end the story has a lot of potential, and I'm proud of it.

Title: Voice of Machines
Genres: Action/Adventure, Mecha
Medium: Webcomic or manga, although animation would also fit it well.

Daniel Morgan is a sheltered lad. He's never left Roland, the small town he was born and raised in. But as long as he's got his gadgets to work with, it doesn't bother him a bit. Daniel has loved to work with machines and technology all his life, and he can coax them into doing things lesser inventors only dream of. He's always said he can hear the 'voice of the machines', and while his fellow villagers don't exactly understand that, they do know his skill has made their everyday life easier in a million little ways.

Our story begins, as many such stories do, with a massive explosion. A giant mecha crashes into the farm on the outer edge of Roland, where Daniel is putting the finishing touches on an irrigation system. It's the legendary mercenary Helena (if she has a last name, she's certainly never given it to anyone) and her robot Red Bolt, who have been chased into town by a team of pirate mecha. Daniel climbs into Red Bolt to find Helena unconscious and dangerously wounded. He sits down, takes a few minutes to figure out the controls, and then proceeds to blow the pirates apart.

Helena takes off without more than a few words of thanks, but Daniel doesn't care. Somehow he'd never thought of piloting a giant robot until now, but the idea is compelling. All that power, and he'll be able to protect people from the pirates who use their mecha for evil. Over the next few months, Daniel cannibalizes his laboratory and old inventions, managing to piece together a robot of his own. Its looks are shabby and piecemeal, but it moves as fast as the wind, and its AI is incredibly intelligent. In fact, after construction was only partially completed, the robot helped Daniel build it! He names his new partner and friend "White Wind", and after his parents reluctantly agree to it, Daniel and White Wind step out into the world beyond Roland.

Meanwhile, Helena is having difficulties of her own. On that day Daniel piloted Red Bolt, the mecha's AI spoke up with a vehemence she'd never heard from it before, and since then, Red Bolt has developed what she can only call a personality. Helena ordinarily wouldn't have trouble with Red Bolt becoming a partner rather than a tool, but that's on top of the pirates still chasing her, mercenary work being slim, and the government starting to get on her back. So you'll forgive her if she feels a bit put-upon. And when Daniel shows up and saves her again -- and Red Bolt develops a crush on White Wind -- Helena demands to know what the hell is going on!

And so the story gets underway. Daniel and Helena start traveling together, working either for pay or pro bono, depending on the circumstances... and also, searching for answers. How is it that robots all over are beginning to develop true intelligence? Why are the pirates chasing after Helena with such determination? What exactly is the strange, shapeshifting tool that Daniel found when he first left Roland?

And perhaps the most important question of all... Daniel's almost godlike affinity with machines and technology... Where did it come from?

So there you go! I'm amazed that it took me this long to have an idea for a giant-robot story. And this summary was fun to write! I should do this for some of my other comic/story/fanfic ideas.

If it's a manga/anime then it needs a different title - this one makes way too much sense.
